Sacred Justice is coming to California!

Sacred Justice workshop in Kitchener.

Sacred Justice workshop in Kitchener.

Next week I’m traveling down the west coast to take part in UC Berkley’s Yoga and Access conference. I’m very excited to participate in this conference, learn from so many inspiring teachers and meet folks in person who I’ve known online for some time.

While I’m in Cali I’m teaching two workshops. One in Oakland and one in Grass Valley.

The Oakland workshop will take place at Underground Yoga Parlour (3209 Peralta st) on Saturday April 26th. I’ll be co-teaching a consent based yoga class from 11 am to 12:30 pm and then offering a Sacred Justice workshop from 1 to 4. More details are available on facebook. This workshop will be geared mostly towards teachers and studio owners, as an extension of the conversation we’ll be engaging in at the conference.

The Grass Valley workshop will take place at Yoga Well (144 Hughes Rd) on April 29th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. More details are available on facebook. This workshop is geared towards community members, healers, teachers, therapists, youth, educators, PFLAG folks and yogis and meditators of all stripes.

If you have any questions or would like to request a workshop in your community, please leave a response in the comments section of this post, or send me an email. You can find my email in the contact section of my website.

Sacred Justice Workshop Tour

Poster for the workshop in Vancouver.

This summer I’m travelling across Canada teaching Sacred Justice workshops. Details are available on facebook here.

This workshop will illuminate the connections between solidarity work and yoga. With meditation, asana and group discussion we’ll explore dynamics of power and privilege and how these affect the ways we relate to each other and build community. So often we hear the phrase, “we’re all one”, but what does this really mean? How can we come to a grounded understanding of interconnection without glossing over the real differences in our lived experiences and political realities? Perhaps we can use the concepts of community support and solidarity as tools to acknowledge the fundamental sense of union that our yoga practice teaches us to explore and honour. All levels of experience with yoga and social justice activism are welcome.

Full moon yoga

Next Saturday, June 22nd, I will be teaching a by-donation class under the (almost) full moon at Trout Lake park. We’ll meet at the corner of 15th and Victoria at 8:30.

No mats needed. Dress warm and bring friends. All levels of experience welcome. Class is weather dependent. Bringing a blanket is usually a good idea.

We’ll work through moon salutations and long-held yin poses with some meditation on either end of the class. The focus will be on grounding out, tuning in and keeping close to the earth while we soak up the moonlight.

Count yourself in on Facebook.

Zine Launch – January 26th

This event will take place at the Toast Collective – 648 E Kingsway, unceded Coast Salish Territory.
List yourself as attending on Facebook.

Join Community Yoga Vancouver and our partners to launch our very first zine. This publication highlights discussions around belonging, access, teacher’s ethics and practices of community care. It features pieces from yoga teachers, community herbalists, activists and more. We hope it will be the first of many.

We will start the night off with a by-donation yoga class taught by a round-robin of all four of our regular teachers. They have very different, but well paired styles so the class is sure to be fun, unpredictable and relaxing. Please send us an email at if you plan to attend the class. We only have room for about 12 students.

After class we will set up the space for something of an open house. There will be performers, venders, tablers and delicious vegan food available by-donation. You can see a list of all our partners below. The timeline looks a little something like this:

Asana class:
6:00 – 7:15
7:30 – 10:00

Copies of the zine will be available for a flexible minimum donation of $5 each. The zine is also fundraising tool for us, so donations above the minimum are welcome.

Community Partners:

If you are interested in performing (music, spoken word, whatever) or having a table (to sell things or promote a community project) at this event please send us an email at We are also looking for photographers and videographer who would like to work this event in exchange for a class pass. Email us if interested.

2013 New Year Announcements.

It’s 2013 and with the new year comes some changes.

My new class schedule features back to back classes on Saturdays. A vinyasa flow class at 2:00 and yoga for stress relief at 3:30, both at Community Yoga Vancouver.

Recently Community Yoga Vancouver switched over to by-donation drop-ins. Please help us make this program grow by recommending us to your friends and anyone you know who is interested in learning yoga in a safer space.

On January 5th I’m facilitating my first Sacred Justice workshop. It’s a collaboration with Community Yoga Vancouver and Karma Teachers. At the workshop we will discuss the difference between charity and solidarity and help teachers (and anyone interested in yoga) how their practice can help them with their social justice work.

Very soon we will be announcing the details for our zine launch. Keep an eye on this site and on the Community Yoga Vancouver facebook page for details.

Update, upcoming events, substitute classes and workshops!

This past week has been an absolute whirlwind. My piece “With Best Intentions: Yoga,  Solidarity and Gentrification in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside” reached a wider audience than anything else I’ve ever written. I was absolutely blown away by the positive reception and the flood of supportive calls, texts, emails, and facebook messages.

By far the best call I received was from Emerson Lim of Karma Teachers – the organization that served as an example in my piece. He called me on the morning of my birthday and we chatted for almost an hour about the piece and our work as teachers. We both agreed that we want to work together in the future to share our skills and resources and help our communities flourish.

In the new year Community Yoga Vancouver will be offering Sacred Service workshops, designed to help yoga teachers (and anyone who feels committed to service) learn about the the difference between charity and solidarity. The first workshop will be with Karma Teachers in early January. Keep an eye out here and on the Community Yoga Vancouver website and facebook page for the announcement of dates for the workshop.

In the meantime I suggest you check out Community Yoga Vancouver’s first public event: Dinner and a Movie Christmas Addition (Now with Yoga!). It’s a joint event between Community Yoga Vancouver and Violet Wire. We will be hosting a by-donation yoga class, followed by yummy food, movies and an info table. All are welcome. Check out the event on facebook.

Community Yoga Vancouver will also have a table at the upcoming DIY Anar-chraft Market.
